Feuerkissen
works
Feuerkissen is the german word for a firestarter, a word created by the combination of fire and pillow. The image of a pillow on fire worked as a metaphor for the intimacy of the studio work for the artist.
In this installation, a very dear friend since university and I shared intimate recordings of our daily life and practice in our studio in the historical neighbourhood of Mouraria, in Lisbon. This pop-up exhibition at Duplex took place only a few days before I left for Berlin and a month before all the artists were kicked out of this studio as the building was sold to foreign investors. The five videos, selected from an archive of those six months, show us filming each other gently as one sees the other, eating microwave lasagna, creating a dadaist still life composed of random objects found in the studio, drinking, acting out improvised performances of the burial of Christ. A self-portrait of two young artists struggling, working, having fun and finding comfort in the possibility sharing a pillow even if it’s in flames.
